Glasshouses verge: 03-09-2024

 Autumn's arrived!

Not quite sure how, but autumn has already, officially, arrived. However - although the season has changed, the NCVs' task this week was the same as the one they did last time they met. They needed to return to the verge at Glasshouses to scythe the strips along the two edges ready for the council grasscutters to come and mow the flat bit between.

So - here they are a mowin' of a meadow...

Hang on - the council have already
been and mown!! What are we going to do?!
Liz had to think on her feet.
 Her instructions were as follows:

Job 1 - Scythe along the hedge and wall
where the council cutter couldn't reach.

Dave and Julia were onto that job right away.

That's a bit of a cheat Liz!

Honorary NCV, Harry, strimmed what looked
like a Mohican haircut effect that
the council had left along the verge.

Job 2 -  Rake up the resulting cut vegetation
and any left by the council.

That's it Ken.
You've missed a bit behind you.

Job 3 -  Shift this heap of cut grass from last week
into the centre of the verge for the council to take away.

Amy and Tom got stuck in with the hay forks.

In no time (with the help of Anita and Brenda)
the area was clear....

...and all the grass was up on the top of the
 verge slope, ready for collection.
Brilliant!

Job 4 - Stop for a break when it's time...

...and partake of Anita's sweet and
 juicy home grown Victoria plums.

Then it was back to work.
Friedy road tested her birthday present.
(Not many women would ask for a scythe!)

Excuse me Phil - I said "Then it was back to work".

"Oh very well. I'll sharpen my scythe.
Will that keep you happy?"

This little oak tree was rescued
from the verge edge and transplanted
 near the picnic area.

Job 5 - clear a bit more of the bridleway.

Job 6 - This was a job for a three man team of expert carpenters and problem solvers....
....Create an en suite toilet at the back of the barn,
using the old barn doors and a pallet,
to fit in this space.

It's always good to have a plan that
uses real world measurements.
Just take a seat Adrian.
David - how much knee space is required?

Good foundations were laid...

...and improved by the master
stone mason.

A work bench was improvised
with materials to hand.

At the end of the day everyone gathered
around, desperate to use
the new facilities. They were told that
they would have to wait and come
back next Tuesday.
