Hackfall Wood: 04-07-2017

Whilst those who live in the USA were busy celebrating Independence day with a national holiday, the NCVs were at Hackfall Wood to inspect and trim back paths. Needless to say they also found some Himalayan balsam to pull up as well - although not nearly as much as in previous years, so it seems their efforts are gradually paying off. A small team also undertook a repeat Wild Watch river survey transect whilst also pruning, litter collecting and HB pulling. Nothing like multi-tasking! They reported seeing evidence of three of the target species, namely a dipper, a grey wagtail and an otter (spraint only).

Phil was busy with a spade clearing blocked culverts.

Dave took some straggling brambles to task.

At Lime Kiln Hill balsam pulling definitely had to be the focus.
Some stems stood strong and proud - easy to spot -
as if calling out " Cooo-eee. Over here. Come and get me."

Other stems were more shy and retiring.

The balsam team at work...

...and at rest - enjoying a piece of Audrey's
flapjack with their morning coffee.

The teams met up at Fountains Pond for lunch.

..where they did their best to make inroads on the cake
that both Ros K and Melissa brought along to celebrate their birthdays.

.Happy birthday ladies - and thanks for the cakes!
