The start of a new year brought the NCVs to the well known work venue of Hackfall Woods. A group of 16 of us were able to sally forth to clear any culverts that had become blocked since our last visit, stack any remaining brash to the side of the vista line above Fountains pond and check the footpaths for fallen branches after the ravages of Storm Barbara. The fresh air and exercise would have helped to alleviate any Christmas excesses if any of the attendees had needed such alleviation but, being very sober and sensible volunteers, such a remedy was not required and we were all able to enjoy the outdoors just for the sake of it!!

It wasn't long before the culvert clearers had
to stop walking and start shovelling.
(Apologies - this is the only photo of this particular activity today!)

Down at Fountains Pond it was clear that the
temperature was low - lots of ice.
Good job I'd put my thermals on!

Rather a lot was the overall feeling.
Everyone got started collecting abandoned brash....
...and brought it to add to a proto-brash pile that was
established to the side of the vista line.
Soon the tiddly little heap became a mighty habitat
pile with vertical brash holders and woven sides.
Once the brash was cleared we then set out to
create more with our loppers and saws..
This tree just has to go.
And so does this one.
Wizard James wove some magic to make
the brash move onto a pile by itself.
Interesting fungi and moss specimens were
found amongst the rotting wood.
Coffee break and lunch were taken down by the pond....
...where we were joined by Santa.
Every so often someone would prime
the pump and the fountain would spout up with a whoosh..
