Hackfall Wood: 29-02-2016

Just our luck. After a week of dry weather it started raining in the early hours - in plenty of time to ensure that today's trip into Hackfall Wood was nice and muddy again. In spite of this prospect 10 NCVs turned out, with two students and their tutors, to carry out routine work ensuring that historic landmarks were kept clear and paths were drained. One party focused on clearing saplings and another team concentrated on blocked drains and stepping stones. By 2:00pm the jobs were done - as can be seen below.

Ros E.

The drain team make a start on the first clogged pipe.

Drain rods were needed so Nick got busy assembling them.

"Coo-eee Osian - are you down there?"

"No - I'm up here.
Ros - I think that Nick has been swilled down to the river!"

Osian (the Beaver) nibbles through tree trunks to make a dam.

This should help to stop the water overflowing the path.
Well - we can try it out anyway.

Meanwhile the sapling clearing team were
beavering away at the weeping rock.
What weeping rock? I can't see one!

They were joined by Fred - a new recruit....

...who obviously ensured that they did a good job.
Julia made it all the way to the bottom.

Josh joined in to remove a tree.

Hang on - this tree has to go too.

There one minute - gone the next!

Coffee time was taken above the weeping rock.

After coffee - on to the next drain and out with the rods again.

The spades were handy too.

Now that's much better.

Lunchtime at Fisher's Hall.

After lunch - more fun in the water.
Stepping stones needed re-positioning across the stream
and then testing out to try to reduce their wobbliness.

Team Sapling moved up to Alum Spring and
cleared the tufa rock of encroaching vegetation.
Nice job folks!

James gave the signs a good scrub so that
we could find out which way to go home.
