Today's task was to revisit Hackfall
Woods with a view to clearing and tidying the vista from The Ruin to
Fishers Hall. On a cool damp foggy autumn day 16 NCVs
gathered at the car park. Following James’ quick instructions the
volunteers picked up their chosen tools for the day and headed off to
Fishers Hall by various routes.
The beautiful view across to the North Yorkshire
Moors is rather hard to see through the fog.
The first part of the morning was spent
clearing a way into the wilderness to be tamed. Waves of NCVs sawed
and lopped brambles, sprouting trees, bushes and fallen trees that
were designated as in the line of sight of the vista.
The NCVs move steadily up the hillside, clearing the encroaching scrub.
This NCV tries to ward off a thief who
is attempting to make off with his tree.
No. Sorry. I'm wrong. He's just getting help with cutting
it down - nearly!! (Click here for video evidence).

Having made a steady start and
refuelled with more of Audrey’s flapjack, the volunteers returned
to the fray with enthusiasm, spreading out and accelerating their
efforts. Brash piles were built or existing ones were added to.
Fishers Hall provides a semblance of shelter for the coffee
break - even though it has no roof or glass in the windows!

A welcome lunch break at Fishers Hall
allowed a satisfying review of work so far and a view of the river
Ure in good flow (as the photo below shows).....
After lunch we continued the clearance
up the vista working past the Fountain’s Pond path to clear small
trees. One of us put a little too much into this and thought hanging
Tarzan-like off a sawn branch would help get it down. The
uncontrolled landing and resulting tumble into a stream bed scored a
justifiable 8/10.
Just after 2:30pm the last NCVs had run
out of fuel and started the Hackfall ascent to the car park and home.
